Buoy 10 update, only a few days left to go!

Today marks the start of our final week chasing Fall Chinook and Coho in the Columbia River estuary for 2020. This has been an awesome season so far, and it has been a pleasure to spend some great days on the water with such great people. Our customers are the absolute best and our business would not be growing without their support.

While we have seen some amazing fishing, this season has also had plenty of challenges. We have had some days where we struggled to get fish only to have our day saved in the 9th inning, and other days that we just couldn’t quite come up with the magic formula. Some years this fishery is difficult and this is one of those years, but despite having to work extra hard for fish this year the payday is seeing a 30 pound black and chrome specimen hit the deck.

With the tides setting up great it’s looking like we will have the opportunity to end our season with a bang. The next few days we get soft tides, and great fishing should follow.

While this season is winding down others are just starting to ramp up! We are beyond excited to get back to our side of the mountains and chase fall chinook and steelhead in our favorite fisheries. September will find us both on the Hanford Reach and at the Confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. We consider both of these locations to be home waters, and we are so looking forward to this season.

Once fall is officially here and the nighttime temps get crisp, you will know October has arrived. October will find us fishing for fall Chinook and steelhead on two of our favorite rivers. The Clearwater and Snake Rivers in October are two rivers everyone should have a chance to fish. We will be targeting the 1-2 punch while side drifting small baits on light rods for both acrobatic steelhead and hard pulling Fall Chinook.

We still have openings during both September and October, and with access to some of the best guides in the inland northwest we can find a way to get you on the water almost every day.

Great Fall Chinook Fishing!

The start to our annual Fall Chinook season has be nothing short of fantastic!  We have been down here in the Lower Columbia River fishing the famed Buoy 10 season and it has not disappointed. We have been getting limits of Chinook most days and we are starting to see a bunch of Coho in our catch.  We still have Thursday the 31st of August open down here in  Astoria. This is our last open date and it is a full open boat.

We also wanted to take this as an opportunity to talk about our upcoming fall seasons. As many of you have heard it is not looking like we will have an opportunity to harvest and fall Steelhead off the Snake or Clearwater Rivers.  This is difficult news to swallow, but we want to make sure you know that there are plenty of great fishing opportunities ahead this fall and because of the lack of Steelhead we are extending our Fall Chinook season on the Columbia River.

Starting the 8th of September we will be jumping back on the migration of Fall Chinook up the Columbia and we will be fishing the Columbia River Gorge near Hood River, Oregon.  We plan on fishing this area through the 16th of September.  These fish in the Columbia Gorge are in great shape as most of them still have more than 100 miles to go before they spawn.  We will fish one of a few locations depending on where the best opportunity for fish is at.  Our most fished areas of the Gorge are the mouth of the Klickitat, Drano Lake, and the mouth of the Dechutes River.  All three locations give you a great chance to take home some great salmon. And the entire Columbia above Bonneville Dam has a limit of two Adult Chinook daily.

We are also planning on extending our Hanford Reach Fall Chinook season through the 22nd of October.  This will give us a great extended opportunity to catch these big Chinook as they state near their spawning grounds on the Hanford Reach.  We often catch some of our biggest Chinook of the year off the “reach” and fishing for these bruisers in the desert of Eastern Washington is a great experience.

We thank everyone for your continued support of Jones Sport Fishing! And without our great customers living our dream on the water would not be possible.

Astoria / Buoy 10 fishing wrap up

Late last week we wrapped up our Astoria / Buoy 10 fall salmon season. We had a great August out on the coast chasing these amazing fish. The fishing this year overall was very good, but we also had some days that we struggled to get into the fish. All in all this season is one of my favorites and I am already looking forward to next year. We are already taking booking for next August, and as many of you know the best dates for this fishery tend to go fast, so booking early is your best bet to get your preferred dates. Below are many of the pictures we took during this past August, and we thank all our great customers for spending time with us.

If you are looking to get in on our next fishing opportunity then you don’t have to wait long! We start our Hanford Reach Fall Salmon season on the 15th of September. This is your next chance to get a crack at the fish that may have made it past us at Astoria. We fish out of Vernita bridge and are able to put you on all the best salmon holes that this section of river has to offer.  This is a diverse and unique fishery where we fish many methods and cover a lot of water through out the day.  For more information check out our Hanford Reach information Page .  To view our available dates click on the Book Online Now button on our Home Page.

Buoy 10 / Astoria Fishing Report.

Buoy 10 Salmon

We had another great day down here on the Columbia River out of Astoria, Oregon today. The bite was not quite as red hot as yesterday,  but we still managed to come in with a nice pile of fish.

We started our day above the bridge on the Washington side. This bite was not as good as the past few days, but we managed to get a few bites and put one nice fish and a shaker in the net. We found our best bite as the outgoing tide went slack down around the Church hole. This was a short lived bite, but we managed to have a very busy hour. The guys had to get back so we called it an early day.

I still have some openings for 2 people on the 30th, and 31st. That’s Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. These are my last open dates before I call it a season for 2016 at Buoy 10.

We still have openings for Hanford Reach Fall Chinook near the Tri cities, Washington. This is a great fishery with a 3 adult Chinook Limit.  This is a great September and early October fishery.   Click the following link for more information   Hanford Reach Fall Chinook20160823_132905.jpg

Buoy 10 Fishing Report

Buoy 10 Salmon

This report is for the past two days, as we had a very long day in on the water yesterday. Fishing over the weekend has been tough for most boats. Some people found decent succes, but for most it was a grind. On Saturday we had a real grinder of a day. For three customers we only landed two chinook, and it took us until 6pm to make that happen.  There were plenty of fish to be caught, but they just did not seem to want to play.

Today was a much better day. We were able to limit out on our hatchery Chinook. We ended up with three nice keepers. We did not get a lot of bites, but we really made them count and we were very fortunate to find hatchery fish as our biters. Today we fished all over the place and never really had a consistent bite anywhere, but we got fish almost everywhere we fished. Our fish today came on both anchovies and herring pulled behind shortbus and Fish flash flashers.

Judging by the action today I really expect this next week to fish well. There are a lot of fish around and the bigger tides we have coming this week should push a bunch of fresh fish into the river. This fishery is a great one and we all have our ups and downs, but by fishing hard and using all the information in front of us we are usually able to get our gear in front of some biters.

We still have some openings! August 17th for up to 4 people, 18th -19th we have 2 seats open, 24th we have 2 seats open, and we have the 30th and 31st open for up to 4 people.

Also don’t forget to get your Hanford Reach fall chinook dates booked. It’s going to be another fantastic year in the “reach” and now is the time to get your dates lined up.
