Columbia River Walleye Trolling Tip: Check your line counter reels

We all have been there before. Why is this rod or that rod not as productive as the others? Why is that rod always tangled? Well have you checked to see if you line counter reels are reading similar to the other rods?

Below is a video tip we put together showing just how much this issue can impact how your lures are fishing. Please make sure you subscribe to our YouTube channel.

Columbia River Walleye Report

Columbia River Wallere

To say that the past few days have been a challenge would be an understatement.  Due to recent heavy rains the flows on the Columbia River have changed greatly in the past week.  As I write this the river is currently dropping and the conditions are getting “better.”  I put that last statement in quotations because although things were a little difficult, after a few adjustments we found the Walleye very willing.  I have wrote before on how we approach fishing for walleye during high flow periods on the Columbia, so when flows came up we changed from primarily pulling deep diving crank baits to trolling bottom bouncers and worm harnesses.  Our key to catching fish in these conditions was to find areas out of the main flow and troll downstream as slow as possible.  We also played with a bunch of combinations with beads/floats and blades before we locked into what these fish seemed to want.  The color combo that worked the best the past two days for us is Gold and Black, and in particular we did well with a black fish pill and a Gold Smile Blade.

Although we kind of stumbled onto a working color combo, our biggest key to success was simply fishing hard.  We barely had one fish by 11am on Friday and we ended with 10, and again on Saturday we didn’t really get into fish until after noon and managed to end up with 15 including a monster 12.35 pound beast!  Walleye fishing is all about paying attention to minor details.  Pay attention to the details, make adjustments, and when you find a groove ride it until it goes away.

The Walleye Spawn is currently on and the spring weather is improving, with that said we have openings over the next few weeks and going all the way through July.  Walleye have become a favorite fishery of ours, so if you would like to see why we like it so much, or to just learn how we go about it get in touch with us and book a trip.

Columbia River Walleye Fishing

We have been fishing hard over the past week and getting into plenty of action on the Columbia River for delicious Walleye! This year we are not catching the numbers of fish we have the past few years, but the overall size and quality of the fish this year is amazing, and we are putting plenty in the boat for guys to take home.

We are finding most of our fish in 20-25 feet of water. Our most successful presentation has been trolling crankbaits. For some reason the action of the cranks are just driving them crazy. We have been running a wide selection of colors, and have really just been playing with things as the day goes on to find the right combination.

Despite the changing conditions this year, I think this has been the most fun I have ever had Walleye fishing as it’s really making us think and execute to constantly put fish in the boat. The months of April and May have for the past few years been our absolute best time frame, so hopefully our good fortune continues over the next several weeks and we get to experience more of this great fishing.

If you are interested in fishing with us we still have plenty of open dates, and we would love the opportunity to earn your business.

Snake River Steelhead

We had a fantastic day in the sun today on the lower end of Hell’s Canyon fishing out of Heller Bar. We ended up putting 8 fish In the net for our two anglers today. The Snake River currently has quite a few fish in it and the fishing is good. We did very well today side drifting eggs and yarn and egg combinations. The water was low today so we fished very light lead and really pounded the slow pocket water near the bank. The water temperature was around 37 which puts these fish in the slower water near the bank. We have open boats next week and will be fishing the Snake through the 15th of February so if you are interested in booking a day get in touch with us.

Clearwater River Fishing Report

The rain is here and the water is up. The past week on Idaho’s Clearwater has been a little challenging due to the amount of rain our area say this past week. With that said we were able to fish every day this week and fishing was good overall. Most of our fish were caught in the Orofino area side drifting eggs and pegged beads. With the dirty water it seems like eggs take a slight advantage over the pegged beads, but we still picked up fish using both set ups.

For this week we expect water levels to drop daily, and the fishing should be fantastic. We normally see awesome fishing after a rain event. As the water clears up and the temperature drops look for fish to get into their normal November pattern. We should start to see more fish in the deeper holes, and also look for fish to be well distributed through out the entire river.

Unlike the past few weeks side drifting bait and yarn will be our go to for the foreseeable future. This is our absolute favorite way to catch these awesome Clearwater B-Runs. Big fish on light tackle is a rush.

Best Trout Fishing of the year! American Falls Trout Fishing is on Fire!

The water has dropped and the trout fishing has gone into over drive. Brett Jones has been putting an absolute smack down on the big rainbows that call the Snake River below America Falls Dam home. Currently we have been averaging 30-40 fish per day. This is the best time of year to fly fish this amazing section of river. This is an amazing fishery that will go all winter long and into March.

If you are interested is some of the best catch and release fly fishing in the country then give Dani in our office a call at 208-669-1569 and we will get you all set up.

Clearwater River Steelhead Report

Kyle has now switched gears from Fall Salmon and is now spending all his time fishing Steelhead on the Clearwater and Snake Rivers. Last week was our first full week of steelhead fishing for the year and things have started out great. We fished all week on the Clearwater. Currently the water is very low and clear, so our tactics have changed a little bit from our normal side drifting program. We are still drifting eggs, yarn, and beads, but we have been spending a large portion of our day pulling plugs.

Plug fishing in these conditions allows us to present our gear to the fish before the influence of the boat affects the fish. By setting out the “wall of death” 75 feet below the boat we are able to drop our plugs into every little nook and cranny that these big steelhead like to hide.

Low and clear conditions are also a great time to fish with a float and jig. By positioning the boat above potential steelhead holding water we are able to drop small jigs into fish well before the boat gets there.

Fishing has been decent with most of our fish being caught before lunch. The steelhead action will improve greatly as we get some fall rains and a little more water in the river. With more water we will again go to side drifting as our number one technique, but in the mean time we are having fun hunting these fish with multiple techniques.

We have openings this week and plenty of open boats and seats in November. All of our Clearwater dates are done as employees of Reel Time Fishing so get in touch with us for available dates and we will get your trip all set up. Our office number at 208-669-1569 is the best way to reach us.

Hanford Reach Continues to fish Great!

Hanford Reach Fall Chinook

We have had an absolutely fantastic week on the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River, near tri cities, WA. We continue to catch all of our fish downstream trolling, with both Brads Superbaits and VIP Spinners. Trolling has enabled us to cover a ton of water and locate the fish willing to bite.

If you are looking to get out on the water with us we have just a few days left open. Sunday the 7th, Monday the 8th, and Tuesday the 9th open. Book online on this website or give our office a call at 208-669-1569 and let’s fill these last few dates, before we head home and target steelhead on Idaho’s Clearwater River.

Hot Fishing on the Hanford Reach

Hanford Reach Fall Chinook

We continue to do very well on the Hanford Reach near the Tri Cities, Washington fishing for Fall Chinook Salmon. Our hot ticket has been downstream trolling both Brads Super baits, and VIP Spinners. By covering lots of water we are able to put our gear in front of the maximum numbers of fish. The fishing here will remain very good well into October. We have 2 seats open the 3rd of October and open boats the 7th-15th of October. Give our office a call at 208-669-1569 or Book Online by clicking on the link at the top of the page.
