Clearwater River Steelhead Fishing Report 1/17/17

Clearwater River Steelhead

This past week we had a few days of really great fishing and a few days we struggled. The weather this past week was particularly brutal and the days we struggled we were ultimately just fighting the cold and wind.  Most of our fish this week were caught side drifting cured eggs and pegged corkies. We fish pegged corkies instead of beads as the rig seems to drift better than a hard plastic bead.  During the frigid temps we also like to back troll divers and Shrimp and plugs.  This give us a chance to slowly present our baits and keep ourselves warm by the heater.

With the weather improving drastically this week we should see some fantastic fishing. There are an absolute ton of fish in the Clearwater system and fishing should be very good now through March.  The last two weeks of  January and the first two weeks of February are my absolute favorite time to be fishing the Clearwater!  Out of all the 20+ fish days I have had 80% have happened during this time frame.   My boat has some openings over the next few weeks and we would love to get you out to see some of this fantastic fishing.

All our Clearwater trips are done as employees of Reel Time Fishing and all final booking will be done through Reel Time.  Give us a call or text at 208-861-0654 for availability.  For more information on the Clearwater River Steelhead fishing trips we offer click here!

Clearwater River Steelhead Fishing Report

Clearwater River Steelhead

Cold weather means hot fishing on Idaho’s Clearwater River. Fishing this past week has been fantastic. Yesterday both Reel Time Fishing boats had double digit days. My boat yesterday put a total of 11 fish in the boat for three anglers with a total of 6 keepers.  All our fish were caught side drifting yarn and eggs single pegged corkies, with eggs being the hotter of the two set ups.

Despite the colder temps the months of January and February are my absolute favorite months of the year for putting lots of big B Run Steelhead in the boat.  We have a bunch of available dates over the next few weeks so if you are looking to brave the elements and potentially have the best day of Steelhead fishing in your life get in touch with us.  For more information on the Clearwater trips we offer click here

All our Clearwater River Steelhead Fishing trips are done as employees of Idaho outfitter Reel Time Fishing. Contact us for availability and information, but final booking with go through Reel Time.

Clearwater River Steelhead Fishing Report

Clearwater River Steelhead

We had a great day Idaho’s Clearwater River yesterday chasing big beautiful B-Run Steelhead.  The river is in prime shape and fishing is good. December and January are two of our most favorite months of the year to fish the Clearwater as the fish have gone into their “winter” mode and are holding in predictable places.  Looking back over the years my boat has had more double digit days during the months of December and January than any other time during our Steelhead season.  All our fish yesterday were caught side drifting eggs and yarn combinations.

During the cold water months of December, January, and February we focus our fishing on the slow and deep portions of most of the holes we fish. Clearwater Steelhead in the winter are trying to conserve as much energy as possible, and because of this slow presentations in deep holes, the slow edge of the seam water, and long gentle tailouts leads to the most success.  Also this time of year we really prefer to fish bait, such as cured roe, as the added smell and taste of good bait will often wake these fish up.

The other reason we truly love this time of year is the lack of competition from other anglers. Yesterday we saw only 3 other boats fishing and only had one drift boat fishing the 7 mile stretch of river we fished.

We have limited openings next week, and then lots of availability during January.  All our Clearwater trips are done as employees of Reel Time Fishing. Give us a call or text at 208-861-0654 to check availability. All final booking is done through Reel Time Fishing. img_0716 img_0750 img_0754

Clearwater River Idaho Steelhead Fishing Report

Clearwater River Steelhead

We had another fantastic day today fishing Idaho’s Clearwater River for huge B Run Steelhead.  We landed a total of 9 Steelhead and had at least 18 confirmed hook ups. Fish is absolutely fantastic now as the large B Run Steelhead are showing up in force.

Our key to success today was fishing hard and covering a lot of water.  The weather delt is a tough hand this morning due to a strong downstream canyon wind that was very reluctant to settle down.  Our best fishing time was from 12 noon until dark as we found a bunch of willing in water we had already fished in the morning, but now with no wind to deal with.  Our most successful technique has been side drifting eggs and yarn.  This method allows us the ability to cover huge amounts of water. It is not unusual for us to fish 10-15 miles of river in a day looking for willing fish.

We work as part of the Reel Time Fishing team as employees to run all of our Clearwater River Trips. If you are interested is a Clearwater River adventure with us please give me a call at 208-861-0654.  We currently have open boats starting this Monday through the week of Thanksgiving!  Also we always like to point out that some of our best fishing happens in the months of December- February. img_0284 img_0286 img_0291 img_0297

Clearwater River Idaho Steelhead Fishing Report

Clearwater River Steelhead

Fishing on Idaho’s Clearwater River has been very good over the past week.  The Reel Time Fishing Crew has again been averaging 6-10 Steelhead boated per day, and double digit hookups most days. As usual we are picking up most of our fish side drifting eggs and yarn combinations, but we have also been doing well backtrolling plugs such as the Maglip 3.5 by Yakima Bait Company.

One of the keys to success in my boat over the past week is having a few different flavors of eggs on the boat during the day. My best producing added scents have been Anis/Krill Super Dipping Sauce and the Anis Super Dipping Sauce. I have been adding a few table spoons to my eggs as part of the curing process with great results.

I currently have some openings to fish the Clearwater in my boat starting the week of the 14th, and lots of open December days. The Clearwater is a great winter time fishery and our best months for consistent fish catching are December, January, and February.  All of my Clearwater trips are done as an employee of Reel Time Fishing  Give me a call at 208-861-0654 to check on availability, and I will also help you through the booking process with Reel Time Fishing

Clearwater River Steelhead Report

Clearwater River Steelhead

We have been experiencing great fishing on the Clearwater River. All our Clearwater River trips are done as an employee of Reel Time Fishing. The team at Reel Time had a great day today averaging 6-10 fish per boat for the 5 boats we had out today. All our fish are being caught side drifting egg and yarn combinations.  Although fishing is currently very good we are having to cover a lot of water to find our biters. With water temps still in the lower 50’s the fish seem very spread throughout the system. We are finding fish in all different types of water, but this time of year we tend to see most of our success in the very head end of pools and in the tailouts. The reason behind this is that these fish are very actively moving and these seem to be the places that most often see holding fish. As water temps start to drop in the coming weeks we will start to see fish pool up in the deeper runs, but for now we are really focusing on the water that is 3-8 feet deep and in the heads or tailouts of holes.

For the next week it looks like we are going to see some rain and another increase in river flows. This should be good thing as it will get fish moving and redistributed throughout the river.

If you are interested in fishing this week we have boats open Friday and some dates throughout November. We consider the next four months November, December, January, and February to be the best months of the year to put trophy B-Run Steelhead in the boat.

Get ahold of me at 208-861-0654 for availability and I will walk you through the booking process with Reel Time Fishing.

Clearwater River, Idaho Steelhead Fishing Report

Clearwater River Steelhead

We had an absolutely fantastic day today fishing Idaho’s Clearwater River. I had two customers join me today on a wonderful October Day. Now though October 15th is the catch and release season on the Clearwater, and it is my absolute favorite time of year to be on the water, and today was a perfect example of that. We landed over 30 Steelhead and Chinook Salmon today side drifting small egg clusters and yarnies. Yes you hard that right over 30 salmon and Steelhead were landed today by two customers! We are forecast to receive a great run of Steelhead this year on the Clearwater, and this area fishes great now – February! For people who like to catch lots of fish and don’t mind watching them swim away the next 10 days are the absolute best fishing of the year, and for people who like to catch and keep fish the Clearwater retention season opens on the 15th of October.
